Significance
For decades, AMG has been the name most closely associated with fast Mercedes-Benzs, and for most enthusiasts, these cars were plenty quick. But for a select few who needed something more, the engineers at AMG devised an even more exclusive badge that only gets applied to the most special cars from the manufacturer. Known as the Black Series, over 20 years, only 6 cars have been given the Black Series treatment, and each one is unique in its own way. In Europe, the first car to receive the Black Series name was the SLK55 AMG built from 2006 until 2008, but none of those ever made it stateside. The first Black Series that came to the US was the CLK63 AMG of 2007-2009. With only 500 units produced worldwide, the CLK63 Black Series was instantly recognizable as something special and has gone on to become one of the most sought-after performance cars of the era.
About this vehicle
This 2008 CLK63 AMG Black Series is finished in Iridium Silver and shows just 15,687 miles at the time of cataloging. Under current ownership for the last 18 months, this Black Series has invoices totaling more than $18,500, which was spent getting the car totally dialed in. Unlike many special edition cars, which take a true car enthusiast to spot the difference, the CLK63 Black Series is immediately identifiable as something special. The most immediate change from a normal CLK are the DTM-inspired fender flares, which house a stunning set of ball-polished 19” multi-spoke AMG wheels. Additionally, a deep carbon fiber rear diffuser, decklid spoiler and carbon fiber front bumper vents give the car a more aggressive look and help channel the air where it needs to go.
The black leather interior retains Mercedes levels of luxury but also features numerous weight-saving features. The two front bucket seats have some serious bolstering on both the back and seat bottom, while the rear seats have been removed entirely. The trim that would normally be wood on the center console and door cards has been replaced with carbon fiber and brushed aluminum for a sportier look. Climb into the driver’s seat, and a small-diameter steering wheel meets you with a flat bottom and aluminum shift paddles on the rear. Behind that sits an AMG gauge cluster with a 200-mph speedometer, a central LCD screen, an 8,000 RPM tachometer, and an analog clock off to the left. Even though this car is intended to be the most “track-focused” Mercedes of the era, it is of course, still fitted with items like dual-zone HVAC, cruise control, Keyless-Go, and a central screen to control the Harman Kardon sound system.
Under the hood sits Mercedes’ legendary 6.2-liter naturally aspirated M156 V8 that has been punched up to produce 500 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Known for its aggressive rumble, the M156 is undoubtedly one of the great engines of the 2000s and perfectly suited to the brutish nature of the CLK Black Series. Power is sent from that engine to a 7-speed AMG SpeedShift automatic gearbox and out to a limited-slip differential at the rear. Recent service work on the car includes a new rear main seal, new water pump and thermostat, new idler pulleys and belts, replaced front and rear brake pads, and an oil service.
Of the 500 produced worldwide, just 349 were sold in the United States, making this one of the rarest Mercedes ever offered stateside. It is also quickly becoming one of the most collectible, with values nearly doubling over the past 5 years. With its lower mileage and recent servicing, this car is ideal for the enthusiast who wants to drive and enjoy their Black Series, as it is ready to be enjoyed as it sits.
