Significance

An instant classic, the 993 generation of the Porsche 911 is now highly sought after. As the last of the air-cooled 911s, they are the most developed of the original formula that first appeared in 1963. The layout of the instruments, the sheetmetal of the door, and the entire greenhouse is fundamentally unchanged from the original 911, and these cars have a feeling of solidity and craftsmanship that was not only missing from the 996 generation that replaced the 993, but is missing from almost every car made in the last 25 years.

Yet despite this old-world craftsmanship and the occasional sign that the fundamental architecture dates back to the 1960s, the 993 is impressively modern, even 25 years after its introduction. The sophisticated multilink rear suspension and massive rear tires make the rear placement of the engine a non-issue, while the twin plug 3.6 liter flat-6 is a torquey high-performance unit that is both tractable and full of character. The brakes, always a Porsche strong suit, are superb, and the gearbox is Porsche's robust 6-speed G50 unit. Sophisticated and high performing but also capturing the essence of the original 911, the 993 has become a genuine classic, one which can be safely driven and enjoyed daily in modern traffic.

Offered in a wide variety of configurations, the Carrera 4S is a particularly desirable variant of the 993. Featuring the flared wheelarches, suspension, and brakes (interestingly the Carrera S did not receive these brakes) of the Turbo but the clean profile and robust naturally-aspirated engine of the Carrera it has a combination of chassis competence, responsiveness, and visual presence unmatched by any other 993.

About this vehicle

This particular car has exceptional history and shows obvious pride of ownership. Sold new at Carlsen Porsche in Palo Alto, California on the 16th of January 1997 to a surgeon at Stanford Hospital, this car spent its entire life in the San Francisco Bay Area, primarily commuting along highway 280 between the owner’s home in Hillsborough and his office at Stanford. Meticulously maintained exclusively at the original selling dealer, the car received an annual service regardless of mileage, as well as repairs when necessary, including cylinder head rebuilds to address the common 993 secondary air injection system issue. This work was performed 14,000 miles ago at a cost of $17,000. The car also received a major service 2,000 miles ago, as well as a minor service 100 miles ago.

Naturally, all service records are included, as is the original pre-delivery inspection form and a host of other accessories including complete books set with pouch (the maintenance booklet is extensively stamped), business card of the salesman who sold the car new, tool roll with tools, factory compressor and jack, plastic tire changing gloves, both original California license plates with original frames from the selling dealer, paper plate from the selling dealer, front license plate bracket, three switchblade keys and one valet key, radio code card, key code card, both Porsche roadside assistance cards, and correspondence from Porsche Cars North America.

The car is in remarkable condition, particularly considering the mileage. The engine compartment is extremely clean, and the car shows impressively little cosmetic wear: a few small chips, a light scuff on the rear bumper, and some road wear on the windscreen and headlights. The owner reports that the car has never had any paintwork, and paint thickness readings confirm this claim. The interior is nearly unmarked, with light wear to the driver’s seat bolster and shift knob, but essentially no other wear to note inside the car.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a superb quality naturally-aspirated manual transmission widebody 993. Fastidiously maintained, completely unmodified, and never painted, this one-owner Carrera 4S is finished in a lovely color combination, and is exceptionally complete in terms of its original accessories and its documentation.
