Significance
Introduced in 2004 at the Paris Motor Show, the Ferrari F430 was among the most advanced Ferrari road cars ever at the time. Gaining more than half a liter of displacement and 83hp over its predecessor, the engine is an 8,500 RPM naturally-aspirated screamer that produces more than 110hp per liter. Also noteworthy was the transition from timing belt to timing chain, which dramatically reduced the complexity and cost of major services. The car was sharpened, both dynamically and aesthetically over its 360 forebear. The Pininfarina design, led by Frank Stephenson, enhanced downforce through the use of advanced aerodynamic testing while twin front ovoid air intakes recalled the legendary 1961 156 Formula 1 car’s “shark nose.” The platform was an evolution of the 360’s groundbreaking aluminum chassis, while additional mechanical innovations included an electronic limited slip active differential (E-Diff), Manettino steering wheel controls for the first time on a Ferrari road car, and Skyhook electronically adjustable suspension.
