Significance

After almost seven decades of platform sharing with Rolls Royce, Bentley’s purchase by Volkswagen Group in 1998 saw nearly two billion dollars invested in the company and all of the resources offered by VWAG thrown behind the company to turn it from a cottage manufacturer, into a luxury car powerhouse. Thanks to models like the Continental and Flying Spur, Bentley went from producing 414 cars worldwide in 1998 to over 10,000 in 2007, which allowed them to develop and produce a follow-up to the aging Arnage sedan. When the Bentley Mulsanne debuted in 2009, it was the first completely unique flagship car from the brand since the 8-liter was produced in 1930 and a massive step forward from the outgoing Arnage. In contrast to the mass-produced Continental GT and Flying Spur, the Mulsanne was completely produced by hand at the Crewe plant, commanding an estimated time of 400 hours per car to build.

Bentley ceased production of the Mulsanne in 2020 and the 6.75-liter V8 went out along with it. The Mulsanne represents the classic, hand-built quality that Bentley has built their name on since 1919 and in this market, is a tremendous value when considering the amount of luxury and performance on offer.

About this vehicle

Sold new at British Motor Car Distributors in San Francisco, this 2014 Bentley Mulsanne is equipped with the coveted Mulliner Driving Specification package and shows 31,118 miles at the time of cataloging. Finished in Beluga Black over a black leather interior, the car is in overall very good condition and represents the pinnacle of Bentley luxury at the time. The addition of the Mulliner Driving Specification increased the price of the Mulsanne by $15,570 but features numerous upgrades- most notably on the outside, a set of new 21” light alloy wheels, and the special “Flying-B” lower fender vents just before the front doors. With its boxy styling, signature polished grille, and large dual-round headlights, the Mulsanne has a presence on the road like no other car and is immediately identifiable as not just a “run of the mill” Continental.

On the inside, black leather covers nearly every surface and the seats feature attractive white piping around the edges. Another addition that comes with the Mulliner Driving Specification is the intricately diamond quilted leather with double stitching on both the seat centers and door cards. Deep brown burl walnut veneers grace the dashboard and center console and the famed metal HVAC vents with their “organ stop” pulls make a great contrast against the dark wood. The front seats feature a massage function and the car is equipped with 4-Zone climate control to keep all passengers comfortable.

Under the hood of the Mulsanne is Bentley’s stalwart 6.75-liter V8 with the addition of twin-turbochargers to help it produce 505 horsepower and an otherworldly 712 lb-ft of torque- available from just 1,750 rpm. This V8 has been around in different forms since 1959 and has always been intended as a low-revving engine with effortless power- and that certainly describes the unit in the Mulsanne. Even weighing more than 5,500 lbs, the Mulsanne is able to accelerate from 0-60 in just 5.5 seconds and at the top end will achieve more than 186 mph. With the Mulliner Driving Specification, the Mulsanne gains “Dynamic Drive Controls” and a “Sport” setting that increases body control on twisty roads and sharpens the steering, but can be returned to its original luxury setting at the touch of a button.
