Significance

Many people cite the original Range Rover as the first luxury SUV but in fact, that title is misplaced. In truth, the Jeep Wagoneer should be the one bestowed with that honor. The SJ chassis Jeep Wagoneer has one of the longest production runs of any car, spanning from 1963 until 1991. Of these, the most famous are almost certainly the late-production Grand Wagoneers, which were on sale between 1984 and 1991. Known for their extensive use of wood applique on the exterior and cushy cloth and leather interior, these trucks became icons of 1980s success and were the ultimate family hauler in the era for a weekend at your cabin.

About this vehicle

This 1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was restored by marque specialists “Grand Wagoneer by Classic Gentleman” based in Bemus Point, NY. Their team sources high-quality, rust-free Grand Wagoneers from around the country and takes them to the next level, refinishing the paint, installing new or rebuilt engines, and adding a few low-key updates to improve the driving experience. This Grand Wagoneer was purchased out of Washington State under the care of a single family from 1987 until 2017 who had averaged just 3,000 miles/year in the car. Finished in Deep Night Blue, this car was uniquely equipped with a matching dark blue padded vinyl top, which was only available on Grand Wagoneers for a limited time. During the restoration, the original vinyl top was preserved as it was in such good condition, but the rest of the truck was re-painted in Deep Night Blue, and the wood-look siding was replaced - but the exterior wood border is also original. Additionally, the grille was replaced, the wheels were refinished, and thin-white wall tires were installed. Through the combination of original and refinished pieces, this truck looks appropriately loved and cherished but not so overly restored that you are afraid to drive it. The tan interior goes perfectly with the exterior color scheme and required minimal work during the restoration. The seats combine tan leather with corduroy centers, and the front two are power adjustable. Carpets throughout the truck have been replaced, and custom floor mats were installed - but the famous deep-pile shag carpeting on the lower doors and seat bottoms, and backs remains original. As these were luxury cars when new, they came well equipped from the factory with air conditioning, a tilt column, AM/FM Cassette stereo, and power locks and windows. Sitting under the hood of this Grand Wagoneer is the legendary AMC 360ci V8 - known for its low-down torque and simple mechanicals. This engine was completely rebuilt and upgraded along the way for improved power and efficiency. During the rebuild, the motor received precision-milled cylinder heads with all new valvetrain, new bearings, new pistons, a new oil pump, new timing chain, and all new gaskets and seals to keep it leak-free. Additionally, one of the less well known facts about the Grand Wagoneer is that it was the last American passenger car to be built with a carburetor - using one until it went out of production in 1991. On this truck, it has been replaced with a modern fuel injection system that improves reliability and efficiency but fits beneath the stock air cleaner and looks factory original. Power is sent through a 3-speed automatic gearbox through a Selec-Trac all-wheel drive system, which can switch between rear and four-wheel drive at the push of a button. When the Jeep Grand Wagoneer went out of production in 1991, it really marked the end of the road for the old style of rugged truck-ish SUVs. Now, more than 30 years later, the Grand Wagoneer is a connoisseur’s choice for a slightly off-the-beaten-path classic SUV that can carry the whole family and their luggage without sacrificing comfort or drivability. This example is in excellent condition and, thanks to the upgraded fuel injection system, will provide reliable transport for years to come.
